The confluence of "Russia!" and "Russia-2" drew the attention of U.S. audiences to Russian art after a decade-long dry spell. In the early 1990s, works by artists of the Moscow Conceptualist school were shown extensively, often on government funds. Critical of the Soviet system, the works were paraded like trophies of the Cold War, as if the art proved why the Americans had won.
